PROVINCIAL STICK CURLING

The Wolfville Curling Centre is pleased to again host the NS Provincial Stick Curling Champiohship, Friday to Sunday, Feb 16-18. There will be nine womens teams and eighteen mens teams competing, including six teams from the Wolfville Curling Club.

What is "Stick Curling" you ask? Any curler in any club game can deliver the curling stone using a specially designed stick instead of crouching in the hack and delivering the stone while sliding out. The "stick" has meant that active curlers can now be in their 70's or 80's and in the case of three of Wolfville's best, they can be in their 90's and still curl. Hubert Sullivan (93), Rob Stirling (93) and David Crowe (94) curl every Mon/Wed/Fri morning and are enrolled in the provincial championship. Hubert will be honoured on Friday night for his leadership role in getting Stick Curling established in Nova Scotia.

So anyone can use a stick but what is the "Stick Curling Game?"

In a stick curling game there are only two players. One curler stays at each end of the sheet and delivers all 6 rocks in an end. Yes, 6 rocks, not 8. The other curler is playing skip at the other end. No sweeping is allowed until the rock crosses the far hog line. No takeouts are allowed until the 4th stone is delivered. A game is only 6 ends not 8. If they call a timeout (max 2) the two players can meet at centre ice to discuss what to do.

Everyone is invited to come to the curling centre over the weekend to watch our seniors compete. In particular the 90 year olds will face off at 12:30 on Friday. Hubert and Rob are on a team playing against David Crowe and the youngster (he's only 70) Fred Crouse. This will be fun to watch.

CASH SPIEL 2018

A very successful Cash Spiel was held at the Wolfville Curling Centre on January 6,7 2018. Our ice maker, Tony Stirling, is the driver behind this annual effort. Tony tries to give teams from across Nova Scotia a chance to compete against the best as they get ready for the Provincial PlayDowns.

TONY IS GOING TO SCOTLAND

Have you heard of the Strathcona Cup? Did you know our ice maker, top level curler, former President of the Wolfville Curling Club Tony Stirling has been asked to play in the Strathcona Cup 2018 in Scotland in January 2018? Here is a short description from their Facebook page:

"At the 1902 Royal Club AGM an invitation from the curlers of Canada was accepted and 25 curlers were selected to represent Scotland on a 40 day tour that would start in Halifax and end in Winnipeg.

In 1908 the hospitality was returned with a Canadian tour party visiting Scotland where, in the absence of frost, matches were played at Crossmyloof Ice Rink, the only indoor rink in Scotland at that time. The Canadians avenged their defeat in 1902 by winning the magnificent Strathcona Cup which had been presented by the President of the RCCC, Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal, in recognition of the President's strong links with Canada where he had been instrumental in the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad.

So started the series of tours, the latest of which is eagerly awaited with the 2018 Canadian tour party due to touch down at Glasgow Airport on 10th January.

The tour starts off with games at Hamilton against the last outgoing Scottish tour party before the Canadian party splits in two with 20 curlers heading north and 20 heading our way. The 20 heading south then have games at Braehead and the Waterfront before they reach Ayr on Thursday 18th."

Here is a link to the Strathcona Facebook Page.

Best of luck Tony from all your fans in the Annapolis Valley.

THE FIRST EVER JOHN DORMAN CURLING SPIEL

November 3-4 2017

On Friday evening 16 teams of curlers descended on the Wolfville Curling Centre for the first ever John Dorman Curling Spiel. This was a special occasion for all who participated. John was a very unique person who was beloved by all. We felt that John was looking down on the WCC this weekend and we all imagined his smile.

The teams consisted primarily of WCC members with a few friends included. We played a round robin format, one game on Friday and two on Saturday. Audrey Dorey had designed a format that had everyone playing the full weekend. Points were awarded for each game and the overall winners, the LeBlanc team, were determined by tallying the results.

And then there was the feast. What a meal we had at the end - stuffed roast pork, veggies, and John's favourite - brownies with hot chocolate sauce.
