MICHAEL ANDREW GRAVES 1957-2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our friend and fellow curler Mike Graves. Our hearts go out to Kim and family. Mike has been a long-time member of the Wolfville Curling Centre, a skip, a player, a volunteer. Mike and Kim have been wonderful supporters of our club for many years. He will be missed.

BRIAR BASH 2020 - A FUN EVENT

The curling club was hopping for our annual Briar Bash last weekend. The teams had fun representing their Canadian province, meeting new people and putting in much effort to win the great trophy... the broom.

Jenga and Crokinole skills were also part of the point system toward winning this event. Congratulations to our winning team, Gerald Woodbury, Steve Shaffer, Megan White, Mac Routliffe

Lobsters and chicken cordon bleu were very much enjoyed. The Lobster crew Brian, Jamie and Stirling worked outside in very windy frigid conditions to produce beautifully cooked lobsters. The same crew, including Steve Mattson, cut the lobsters to be enjoyed by all! Thanks for doing this!

The kitchen was a buzz with Debbie Boutilier, Kathy Johnson, Bev Girvan, Linda Nette, Bonnie Morrison and others that i might have missed!. Your efforts were commendable! The setup and clean-up crews, so necessary, chipped in to make light work.

Great Day! Thanks, Brian Boutilier for taking the lead! Enjoyed by all!

WOLFVILLE CURL FOR CANCER 2020

A message from Dean Smith, Event Organizer

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked the Bar, the Kitchen, the Ice, the 50/50 scoring, etc., and certainly to the players and fundraisers. I try not to use names in case I miss someone. Chairing the event with me were Marilyn Campbell Proffitt and Alden Profitt. They kept me sane.

We also have to acknowledge the very generous donations to the silent auction by local merchants. The winning bidders are encouraged to recognize these vendors whenever possible. I will also be sending out notes of gratitude to the vendors.

The total amount raised on the day was $12,585.00. However, there was a cheque dropped off to me on Sunday for $200 and another $85 from the silent auction. So the total to date is $12,870.00.

The top 3 teams were:

  1. Team Jim Irving
  2. Team Mike McKillop
  3. Team Chad McKinnon

The full team names will be posted on the annual plaque at the club.

The Top 3 fundraisers were:

  1. Mike McKillop
  2. Ted CorkumMarilyn
  3. Campbell Proffitt

These names will also be posted on the annual plaque at the club.

Again, a sincere thank you to all!

Their teams outmatched the WCC both on Windsor's ice as well as on Wolfville's ice.

Well played Windsor!

 ANNUAL LADIES FUNSPIEL

Our 17th Annual Ladies Funspiel was, once again, an astounding success! Forty ladies enjoyed a day of curling, food, and entertainment. Many contributed to making this event a success and a big “thank you” is being sent out to those who assisted in any way.

Our entertainment was a production entitled Erma Bombeck – “At Wit’s End”. Carole Ball played Erma Bombeck, a suburban housewife and mother who found humour in her day-to-day activities. From the laughter, cheers, and a standing ovation, I think this was an appropriate theme for a large group of women!

Thanks to Dan Kapp for his assistance in setting up the lighting and sound system for the production and to all the ladies for the beautiful bouquet of flowers!

CASH SPIEL 2020

Our annual Cash Spiel for 2020 was a great success, showing off some of the excellent talents the province has to offer. Congratulation to the team of Trevor Archibald, David Lonergan, Ross Monette and Mike McGowan as the winners of the 'A' section with team Dugas with Ian Dugas, Andrew Seymore, Richard Weihers and Adam Harris running a very close second as runner-up. Congrats to the 'B section winners Team O'Leary made up of Allan O'Leary, Stuart MacLean, Danny Christianson and Harold McCarthy with Team Jackson made up of Virginia Jackson, Andrea Rushton, Sue McEachern and Debbie Ansenault as the runner-up team. We want to thank all of the teams that entered this year, we had one of the strongest fields we have ever had.

As manager/organizer of the Cash Spiel, Tony Stirling wants to also thank all of the volunteers that come out to help. Special mention to Greg Williamson for the bar service and help with the ice committee. Audrey Dorey for the food service and lots of other details. Chef Rice for cooking the wings to perfection, everyone thought they were great. And to all others that helped us show off our club and the hospitality that the Wolfville Curling Centre has to offer. This is a big fundraiser for the club and it takes a lot of folks to make it happen.

President Betty Matson also says many thanks to all.

CAN-AM CUP - A SUCCESSFUL VISIT TO WOLFVILLE

Friday afternoon, November 22nd, a group of American Curlers brought the Lepping-inch Trophy to Wolfville to play against members of the WCC. Members of the Wolfville club greeted the US arrivals with arched brooms and to the sound of bagpipes played by John Whidden.

The US men were then introduced to the music video “She’s called Nova Scotia” by Rita MacNeil. A traditional Maritime lunch (fishcakes, baked beans, salad, and apple crisp) was then served. After a few words of welcome and the singing of the respective anthems, it was on to curling. The WCC won 2 games, tied 1 and lost one. However, the “spirit” of curling was very much in play. “Farewell to Nova Scotia” ended the US men’s visit to Wolfville.

Their last stop before returning to their country was in Halifax, where the Mayflower Curling Club held a closing banquet. The US men were asked what was the highlight in their tour of our Atlantic provinces: the reply was their visit to Wolfville, it was “exceptional”. This high compliment is the result of our fantastic curling members, who volunteered their time and energy to make this stop “exceptional”.

A heartfelt thank you to Audrey D. who organized and captained the event, to Tony S. for providing great ice, to the players - some of whom took a day off work- to host and play, to the ladies who worked the kitchen, and served the meal, to Gerry and Kim who worked the bar, to John Whidden who played the bagpipes, to Ken Sponagle who brought in members of the “The Barbershoppers” to sing; and to all who came to watch and support the curling - the best audience the US men had on their tour - a very sincere gratitude for your support.

JOHN DORMAN SPIEL 2019

We had a successful opening bonspiel this past weekend! John Dorman's bonspiel is a great icebreaker (sorry about the pun) that reconnects us with our curling friends and welcomes new members. It also not only remembers the late John Dorman, who contributed so much to the WCC, but it also raises funds for the club, over $2100.

However, this would not have been possible without the wonderful help we received from our members and non-members: Vern, who decorated our tables, Nelda, Darlene, Brian P. who peeled and cut potatoes and carrots, Gerry & Kim who tended bar for us, Jane C. who registered the teams, Tony and Greg who maintained the ice, Bev B., Phyllis G. & Angela M. who contributed to the menu, our servers, our dishwashers, Mac R. who responded to all our requests, such as being MC, guarding the parking lot, changing light bulbs, etc,; and to all the curling participants,

A Sincere Heartfelt Thank you!

Carole, Audrey D., Kathy J. (Bonspiel Organizers)
