BETTY AND AUDREY - CANADIAN CHAMPS

Betty Mattson and Audrey Dorey of the Wolfville Curling Club won the women’s division of the Canadian Stick Curling National Championship held in Moncton New Brunswick April 22-25, 2022.

The championship featured teams from nine provinces with twenty-seven teams registered in the Open division and eight teams registered in the Women’s division.  Mattson / Dorey were one of four Nova Scotia teams competing and the only female team from Nova Scotia.

They overcame an 0-3 start to then go undefeated through the remainder of the round-robin and championship play.  They won the championship on the final shot of an extra end to defeat Hughes / Reid of Prince Edward Island in an exciting back-and-forth battle.

We are very proud of Betty and Audrey and their gritty performance in Moncton.

PROVINCIAL STICK CURLING AT WCC A SUCCESS

Thanks to the Volunteers at the Nova Scotia Provincial Stick Championship on March 17-20, 2022

I wanted to thank the volunteers who offered their time to make this tournament a huge success.

We had 34 NS  teams arrive in Wolfville with 7 being from our own club! Well done! The Winners were from Yarmouth -Paul Doucet/Dave MacDougall  Men’s Champions, the women - Pauline Bullerwell /Diane Mallinson. Congratulations!

We used our spares as we had to replace curlers who became ill. Thanks to Eldon Smith who spared with Kevin Ritchie and went to the Quarter Finals. Well done Eldon!

Our dinner consisted of Chicken cordon bleu, rice ( made by Debbie), salad (made by Sue and Peter), and Apple Crisp made by a gang of wonderful apple peelers and crisp makers.  Thanks to those who helped put the meal together and sold lunches from the Rob Stirling Café. Bonnie,  The dining tables dressed in white tablecloths and  Nova Scotia Tartan looked smart and inviting. Vern LeBlanc made beautiful seasonal arrangements for each table which were well sought after.

There were many highlights in this event.  The first was the induction of Hubert Sullivan into the Nova Scotia  Stick Curling  Hall of Fame. A picture of Hubert was presented which will be hung in our club. Hubert will be presented his award at home in the next week. Hubert organized the first stick tournament in Wolfville in 2007 and the Nova Scotia Men’s championship trophy is named in his honor.

Another highlight was Ellen Stirling’s Coconut cream pies. They did not last long! Thank you Ellen!!!

Thanks to the scorekeepers, on live scoring Fred, Murray, Ken and Sam. Thanks also to the registration desk Steve Mattson and Elizabeth Swindell.

Thanks to the ice makers Tony and his assistants Denis and Ed. The ice was fantastic! The bar was extremely busy and was well staffed with Vern, Greg, Diane, Kim, and Ellen. Thanks for your work and late hours!

A special thanks to Mike McKillop who built a podium with Ed Peverill painting it. It worked well for the AGM.

A note from the  Virginia Jackson Executive director  NSCA who played in the tournament stated:

"You guys did an awesome job - thank you. Vern was willing to take Jake (her dog) out for a pee on Saturday - don’t get that service in Metro!!"

The members of the Wolfville Curling Club want to thank our President Betty for her efforts to make this event a success. She was up early pounding chicken breasts, making carrot cake and other goodies. She was at the rink from early morning to late night just working away and making sure everything went well.

THE 2022 ANNUAL MEMORIAL WCC BONSPIEL

A very successful Memorial Bonspiel was held at the Wolfville Curling Club on Friday/Saturday March 11/12, 2022. This is the first bonspiel we have been able to host since Covid shut us down two years ago. All players and volunteers were delighted to re-engage in this event.

The bonspiel started on Friday night with a Memorial Ceremonial tossing of deceased members' stones. We played three six-end games, Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. We had lunch together at noon, followed by a lively auction for home-baked items made and donated by members.

And the "Best" Team won. Bob Best Skip, Darlene Sweet Mate, Jim Roy 2nd, and Hugh Curry Lead. Second place went to the Kennie Team and third to the Corkum Team.

Thanks to all the participants and volunteers. Let's do this again next year, hopefully as the first event of 2022-23.

Thanks, President Betty.

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL

December 11th was our Wolfville curling club Christmas party. Organized by Debi Sponagle and Audrey Dorey, the evening started with two sheets of curlers, followed by a turkey shoot. Tiffany and her family will be eating well.

The potluck dinner was perfect. Debi wanted to keep it relaxed and informal so there was no sign-up for dishes. We could have had 35 plates of cookies but the selection was balanced. Greg, Vern and Kim looked after the most important part with their usual good humour…..the bar! We are a special club, blessed with selfless volunteers and caring individuals and led by a gracious president. Thanks to Debi for organizing the evening, decorating the place and for the basket the Thursday women’s group donated, which Fred Crouse won and for all the people who bought tickets. $455.00 was raised.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, Sue Tatrallyay

The WCC was delighted to host on Saturday Nov 20, a breakfast and curling etiquette session for new members to the club. We were able to go over on ice etiquette, game setup and procedures followed by a few games among their peers. Many thanks to Audrey, Debi and Dean who generated the idea and organized the event. Also thanks to the supporting members who showed up to help out.
