CLUB REVITALIZATION UPDATE

This past Saturday, Kody Blois, the federal member of parliament, came to the WCC to present a $100,000 cheque towards the accessibility project to be done in 2024. The presentation was short because of the ongoing stick curling bonspiel, but sweet, made sweeter when Denise Pray planted two thank you kisses on Kody's cheeks. See photos below. This is no doubt a great boost to the WCC revitalization program.

CASH SPIEL RESULTS

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those in making our Annual Cash Spiel another success.

We had a great turnout of spectators with a full field of assorted teams. We were fortunate to have the reigning NS Provincial Scottie Championship Team Christina Black, the reigning NS Provincial Senior Women’s Team Theresa Breen, the reigning NS Provincial Master’s Women’s Team Joselyn Nix, former Tankard Champions, former Junior Champions, former Canadian Mixed Champions and the list goes on.

The local Stirling team of Tony Stirling, Robbie Harrison, Peter Milne and JP Boudereau got to the ‘A’ final against Christina Black where Christina show us the reason she is the reigning NS Scottie Champ with a win in 6 ends. Congratulations to Christina and here team of Jenn Baxter, Karlee Everest and Shelley Barker.

In the ‘B’ final Jen Crouse and her team of Julie McEvoy, Sheena Moore and Kaitin Fralic defeated Doug Bryant and his team of Kevin Lonergan, Joel Smith and Donnie Smith. Many thanks to Audrey and her team for all the snacks put out after every game and the soup and sandwiches on Sunday. Thanks to the bar committee for all of their efforts serving drinks all
weekend. Thanks to the ice committee for great ice all weekend. These events require lots of volunteers for with them it would not be successful. This is close to 20 years hosting this cash spiel and again the members of the Wolfville Curling Club came
through to make it another success. Thank you all.

MEMORIAL BONSPIEL

The Memorial Bonspiel on Dec 2&3 was a great success! We started by honouring Glenn Fenton. Glenn passed away last fall after having been a long-time member of the club. His family was present and witnessed his daughter, Faith, throwing a ceremonial rock. We also celebrated the contributions of three of our long-term members and leaders. Audrey Dorey, Brian Porter, and Brian Boutlier were recognized for their many contributions to the success of the WCC.

It was a pleasure watching 92 year old Denise Pray take on the "big boys." She led her team to third place overall. The Bob Best team was second runner-up and played consistently all weekend.

The winning team of Kendall and Angela Merritt with Geri Comeau and Danny Silver were awarded the John Dorman Memorial plaque for coming first. Congratulations.

This bonspiel was the first big fundraiser for our three-year Revitalization project. We brought in over $2000, a great start to this effort. We hope to offer another club fund-raising bonspiel around Valentine's Day. Watch for notices of that event in the New Year.

THE MCLELLAN CUP COMES TO WOLFVILLE

Our club will host the 117th McLellan Cup on Feb 15, 2023!

This is the oldest continuously challenge trophy in North American curling. It was first competed for in an inter-Provincial Bonspiel between the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia clubs at Moncton in 1887. It was the gift of the Honourable D. McLellan, Provincial Secretary of N.B.,1883, and Member of the Legislative Council to 1890. Travelling along with this trophy are massive record books that document each game that has been played in the competition over the years. Included are the club represented, team player names, and game scores.

The challenge takes place with 3 teams selected from interested male club members on a Wednesday afternoon. The winner then travels the next Wednesday to defend against another club. This will continue each Wednesday for the travelling club until they are unsuccessful in the defence of the cup. In this case, the host club will travel the next Wednesday.

For the full schedule, please see here - The McLellan Cup 2022-2023 Schedule
